For over ten years, Debby Adams has worked with authors to write, edit, and publish books on a variety of subjects, including the arts, science and health, literature, sports, and popular culture. A number of her projects have received critical recognition, including “In an Influential Fashion” by Ann Kellogg et al, which was recognized as Library Journal Best Reference Source for 2002, and “The Encyclopedia of Film Noir” by Geoff Mayer, one of Choice magazine’s Outstanding Academic Titles for 2009.
She began her writing and editing career early, with her high school’s creative writing magazine. Debby then attended Southern Connecticut State University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, graduating with honors. She completed her thesis on the changes in perceptions of women’s roles as environmental activists as portrayed in traditional women’s magazines. She also published her first creative essay in the New York Times.
In graduate school, Debby earned an MLS degree, specializing in young adult services. She worked in several public libraries, assisting teenagers and adults in a variety of research projects as well as guiding them to books for pleasure. She published numerous articles, bibliographies, and reviews in professional library journals including Wilson Library Bulletin and Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA).
Debby’s library experience led her to an opportunity to become an acquisitions editor for a major publisher of academic reference and nonfiction works. In this role, she created and designed new book projects, evaluated book proposals negotiated contracts, and evaluated sample chapters, providing editorial feedback from outline to final manuscript. She also assisted authors in locating and selecting images for their books. Debby’s favorite part of being a senior acquisitions editor was discovering new authors and helping them develop their skills to publish unique and well-reviewed books.
As the owner of Shoreline Writing Services, Debby continues to work with authors of all ages to help them achieve their writing goals, whether professional or personal. Working online or in person, Debby gives one-on-one attention to each author, tailoring her guidance to meet the needs of each client. Debby lives on the Connecticut shoreline with her husband and three cats, and writes both fiction and nonfiction.
